Take a fun family vacation to Disneyland.

This year it is the 50th anniversary of Disneyland and I’m sure you have been enchanted by all the different advertisements that are shown on television. But how much do you really know about the “happiest place on Earth” as the official slogan describes it? Though today the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando is bigger and also popularly called Disneyland Walt Disney originally founded his “magic kingdom” in Anaheim, California. Now there are international Disney theme parks (Euro Disney, Tokyo Disneyland) with more set to open soon.

Started in 1955 by Walt Disney, the parks are today world famous attractions appealing to the young and the old alike. In California, one can find all the Disney characters-from Mickey and Minnie to Snow White and Sleeping Beauty to Winnie the Pooh. Disneyland offers a range of rides, shows and daily parades. A visit to Disneyland is incomplete without a meeting with Mickey Mouse at his home. The long lines outside the home of this famous mouse would be the envy of any celebrity. On weekend nights firework shows are also part of the schedule. Since the park sprawls over acres of land, there are railroads inside with quaint platforms and stations to take visitors from one attraction to the other. A monorail also operates inside the Anaheim park.

The park is divided into five segments: Main Street, USA, Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, all appropriately named. Main Street is lined with various shops filled with souvenirs and memorabilia and there are no rides here. The buildings are reminiscent of a bygone era and one feels an old world charm walking down the street. Adventureland takes you into tropical jungles and you can get a feel of how a ride down the Amazon might be. Frontierland pays tribute to America’s history. Fantasyland has Peter Pan,Alice in Wonderland and a huge carousel amongst its attractions. Tomorrowland deals with thrilling futuristic inventions and space rides. Don’t be disheartened by the lengthy queues you are sure to find at all the rides; take advantage of the “fast pass” facility and save time!
